MedallionClass™

IoT Ecosystem | Designed for Delight, Built on Safety
Project Overview
As a UX Design Leader at Level 11, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Princess Cruises to develop innovative muster and gangway systems for their MedallionClass™ experience. This project aimed to enhance passenger safety, streamline embarkation and disembarkation processes, and elevate the overall cruise experience.

The key to successful UX in this case was a reduction in the amount of UI a Guest was exposed to, so clear interfaces for crew were our focus.
My Contributions
As a Visual Designer, I crafted visually appealing and intuitive interfaces that enhanced user engagement and satisfaction. In my role as a UX Designer, I focused on creating seamless and user-friendly experiences by conducting user research and implementing feedback-driven improvements. As a Design Manager and Design Communicator, I led a talented team, ensuring clear communication and collaboration, while effectively conveying design concepts and strategies to stakeholders.

Project Goals
Improve Safety and Compliance: Ensure all passengers complete the mandatory muster drill efficiently and accurately.
Streamline Embarkation and Disembarkation: Reduce wait times and congestion during boarding and leaving the ship.
Enhance Passenger Experience: Provide a seamless, touchless experience that integrates with the MedallionClass™ technology.

Challenges

Integration with Existing Systems: The new systems needed to seamlessly integrate with the existing MedallionClass™ infrastructure, which includes the OceanMedallion™ wearable device and the MedallionClass™ app.
User Experience: Ensuring the systems were intuitive and easy to use for passengers of all ages and tech-savviness levels.
Real-Time Data Processing: Handling the experience while large volumes of data in real-time to track passenger movements and compliance.
Language Proficiency: Designing a system that could be easily used by crew members with varying levels of English proficiency.

Solutions
Muster System:
Digital Muster Check-In: Passengers could watch the safety briefing video from anywhere on the ship and then check in at their muster station using their OceanMedallion™. This eliminated the need for large gatherings and ensured compliance with safety protocols.
Real-Time Tracking: The system tracked passenger check-ins in real-time, providing the crew with up-to-date information on muster drill completion.

Gangway System:
Touchless Embarkation and Disembarkation: Leveraging the OceanMedallion™ wearable, passengers could board and leave the ship without physical contact, reducing wait times and enhancing safety.
Automated Alerts: The system sent automated alerts to passengers’ devices, informing them of optimal times to embark or disembark, thus reducing congestion at the gangway.

Collaboration with Captain Paolo Arrigo
Working closely with my assigned corporate stakeholder Captain Paolo Arrigo, an accomplished mariner with over a quarter-century of experience at sea, was instrumental in the success of this project. Captain Arrigo’s extensive maritime knowledge and leadership were crucial in ensuring the systems met regulatory standards and were practical for crew members with varying levels of English proficiency. His insights helped us design user-friendly interface modules that facilitated smooth adoption by the crew.

Results
Increased Efficiency: The new systems significantly reduced the time required for muster drills and gangway operations, enhancing overall operational efficiency.
Enhanced Passenger Satisfaction: Passengers appreciated the convenience and safety of the touchless systems, leading to higher satisfaction ratings.
Improved Safety Compliance: The real-time tracking and digital check-in ensured that all passengers completed the muster drill, improving overall safety compliance.

Conclusion
The successful implementation of the muster and gangway systems for Princess Cruises’ MedallionClass™ experience showcases the potential of innovative digital solutions in enhancing passenger safety and satisfaction. This project not only streamlined critical operations but also set a new standard for the cruise industry.
